Circumnavigation: a world of adventures await

Except for the two years I lived in South America, this new trip is the biggest, most complex excursion of my life. I’ll be circumnavigating the globe, crossing through four of the seven continents, more than a dozen airports, and many cultures.

Years ago, I was an endurance athlete and remember the painstaking care required in training, nutrition, planning, and prep for maximum performance. And a key element: nothing new on, or leading up to, race day.

Over the past few weeks as I’ve prepared for this latest adventure, I realized that traveling and endurance sports have a lot in common. You must hope for the best and plan for the worst, you must know yourself and what your nutrition needs and dealbreakers are (especially those of us with food sensitivities) and how best to refuel and recharge, and you must know the gear that works for you. This time I broke my own rule of nothing new right before a trip because I was overdue for new gear that better suited my travel lifestyle. In doing so, I met two amazing women and new followers at REI: Olivia who fitted me for my new Osprey hiking pack and Amy who introduced me to Maine-made dehydrated food called “Good to Go” while we bonded over hiking shoes.

I hope you’ll join me for this exciting adventure and feel free to share with others who might enjoy it! Remember to follow me on Instagram as well. Here we go!
